Intention: Summer CSA 2017: Week #12

Intention
I don’t go to yoga classes as much as I’d like to.

My life feels so busy and it’s hard to make it to the classes. Plus I have this yoga app that has short classes and there’s Youtube classes too that I can take on my own– at my own home, on my own timeline.  I find myself thinking, why pay to go to a class when I can do it free from home?

The result?  I rarely do yoga during the growing season, which is when my body most needs me to take care of it.

So when my friend Marca (Yoga with Marca) recently suggested we trade yoga classes for CSA, I was all about it. I now have the skin in the game I need to get myself out of the house and to some classes.

Marca is a wonderful instructor.  And the beautiful thing is, I know that my experience will be great not just for my body and mind, but it will include a social dimension that cannot be experienced at home. I will get to see friends from my community and meet new people as well.

While I do occasionally do yoga at home, I have learned that for myself and my life, signing up for a class is a surer way for me to follow through on my intention to keep my body aligned.

Okay, so why am I, your farmer, sharing this with you?  It’s because having this realization about myself and yoga, reminded me of many peoples’ relationship with veggie dense eating and how CSA can help that.

Joining a CSA literally forces our members to follow through on their intentions to eat healthy.  It forces you, the member, to learn how to cook more at home and with many more veggies in every dish.

Just like I can do yoga at home, you the CSA member could buy all of the items you receive in your box at the organic aisles of grocery stores or at farmer’s market. You could on your own cook just as many meals at with with just as many vegetables. But I’m going to hazard a guess that most of you wouldn’t eat as many vegetables if you weren’t CSA members.  But you have chosen to do CSA.  By purchasing a membership to our farm, you have put financial backing to your own intention.

And just like I get so much more out of going to an in-person class with Marca, you get so much more as a CSA member than just a regular organic grocery shopper. You get greater value, aka more food for your dollar. You know you are supporting your local economy.  You know your food is super fresh!  You are guaranteed to eat healthy. You get a chance to know your farmers and to come out and experience where your food is grown.  You get to join in fun farm activities like making t-shirts, enjoying potlucks, and barn parties.  You get to socialize with others when you pick up your share.  You get to experience what eating with the seasons really means. You get a slice of a farm life you wouldn’t otherwise know about through our newsletters.

Whether it’s doing yoga, learning the guitar, working out more, or eating more vegetables – many of us have intentions to do certain things. Yet left to our own devices, we often don’t do them as frequently or consistently or as well as we’d like. Recognizing the inertia of our busy lives, making financial commitments to do something (whether it’s joining the gym or signing up for guitar lessons) helps us better do what we intend to do.

So as organic and local food choices become increasingly more available, we hope you’ll remember that CSA is and can continue to be a powerful, sure way to keep local, veggie-dense eating a reality in your life.

Thanks for reading and enjoy your veggies!
