The Goldilocks Time: Summer Week #19 – 10/9/24
The Goldilocks Time
These dry, sunny, cooler days have been absolutely phenomenal. Words can’t describe, really, how amazing it is to work outside when it’s cool in the mornings and delightful by the afternoons.
Everyone in Wisconsin is for sure enjoying this cool down into fall temperatures, I’m sure! But for us farm workers, it is extra special. A reward. It’s not just that it feels good to go outside after a day in the office. Rather for us, it is a relief from what can sometimes feel like relentless sun and heat that we work through all summer long.
We generally work in hot temperatures for 4 months each year. Day in, day out we are out in that hot sun. Usually the mornings include a couple hours where we aren’t sweating yet, but then for most of the rest of the day – the remaining 8 hours – we are sweating. When it’s really hot, we are already sweating at 8 am.
So imagine JUST how good this feels. The sun no longer feels like something we must protect ourselves from. Instead it feels lovely on our arms, hands, and faces. We start the morning in hats and sweatshirts, and then clothes are strewn about farm spaces as the sun gradually warms us.
It is lovely. Absolutely lovely.
A window of reward that we all reap. Not too hot. Not too cold. It’s Goldilocks time out here in the fields.
