2024 Reparations Recipient – Farmher Greens

Dear Members,
This year’s reparations farm recipient is FarmHer Greens in Madison, Wisconsin. FarmHer Greens was founded by Kim Fruin, and she has been growing produce at Troy Farm Collaborative since 2020.

Kim is very focused on growing food that is culturally relevant for her community, and she fervently believes in the connection between healthy food and the ability of our kids to learn and be healthy and happy. She focuses on the production of food “that matches [her] community’s genotype from the Africa diaspora and gives BIPOC children the best chance for health and success.”

I asked Kim to tell me a little bit about her farm – what it does and its history, and I want to share that with you this week, because Kim’s operation is AWESOME.

Kim shared with me that: “thirteen years ago, I started growing greens for green smoothies in my back yard to heal myself due to a cancer scare. I loved it so much that I wanted to become a farmher. Farmher Greens was born out of lived experience, resilience, love, passion, re-education and representation. I now focus on growing produce that is nutritionally and culturally relevant to my community, using indigenous regeneration practices.”

She adds, “I believe my farm is a step in the right direction. It is heartforward, and it responds to our past tramas while at the same time starts the healing of our present day. I am empowered to grow food that my community wants and needs.”

I had the honor of meeting Kim when she was telling the US Secretary of Agriculture about her Madison farm. Her passion for growing healthy, local food was palpable and powerful. Crossroads is very excited to give Farmher Greens all of the reparations funding this season.

While $3800… isn’t much, Kim is excited to use the funds to build up the infrastructure of her farm so that she can increase the size of her farm to provide more food to her community.
