Glean & Screen: CSA 2017 – Week #3
These 3 little girls are so excited for you to come visit the farm!
Our first on-farm event of the season is coming up on Saturday, July 1st, 1:30 – 4pm. We call it the Strawberries and Silkscreens event, though the rhymer in me wants to change the name of the event to Glean & Screen.
The event is a super fun family afternoon. The girls get so excited about it because there are kids everywhere and you get to make a craft (a t-shirt). I’d like to think that they like it too because it’s a chance for them to feel super proud of where they live and what their family does.
So to back up, what does glean mean? Put at its simplest, glean means to gather what’s leftover after a harvest. It’s important to know that the strawberry pick portion of this event isn’t a big U-pick with thriving plants loaded with fruit. You see, we grow our berries to give to you, our CSA members, in your boxes. Little feet and hands belonging to little people not used to farm rows aren’t so great for keeping the crop healthy. So, we open up the patch to you and your families once we are pretty much done picking it for the season. That’s right, you get to glean. It’s always kind of a guessing game which weekend will be the best, and we always worry there won’t be enough! So we like to set your expectations pretty low on the strawberry end of things so that hopefully you’ll be super excited when you and your kiddo fill up a container.
Meanwhile, the t-shirt part of this event is great fun! Each year we create a new design that can be silkscreened onto shirts. You bring your own shirt(s) and we’ll have everything else you’ll need. We have several designs from prior seasons and lots of different paint colors. Zea is super excited because she created this year’s NEW design! It’s a 7 year old’s graphic interpretation of farm fields. I’m the biased Mom, but I stand by it being pretty cool!
Other fun things to do on the farm include wandering around to see how the veggies grow, visiting our pigs and chickens, and playing on the kids’ playset.
