Broccoli and Meatballs in Tomato Sauce

Broccoli and Meatballs in Tomato Sauce


2 T canola or olive oil

2 cloves garlic, smashed

1 t EACH coriander, cumin and ginger

1 large head broccoli

½ t salt

1 ½ c tomato juice or frozen whole tomatoes

¼ c raisins

1 branch of rosemary


1 lb ground beef

1 onion, minced fine

1/3 c bulgar

½ t cinnamon

¼ t salt



1Mix together the meatball ingredients, shape into 1 inch balls and set aside.

2 Heat the oil in a not-too-wide soup pot. Add the garlic and spices, frying for a minute or so.

3 Add the broccoli and meatballs. Pour the tomato juice over the top, adding more if necessary to almost cover the vegetables and meatballs. Scatter the raisins and rosemary on top.

4 Bring to a gentle simmer, cover the pot and cook gently for 30 minutes or until the meatballs are cooked and the vegetables are tender.

5 Don’t stir it after you put everything in the pot- there’s no need and you don’t want to break the meatballs.
