Ode to Farmer Mike: CSA Week #7: July 24, 2019

 In CSA Newsletter
As you read this, I am unplugged, hanging out with my children in Cass Lake, MN near Bemidji.  That’s right, I’m a farmer on vacation in July!

It’s amazing!

You may be wondering how.

Great question.

The answer is: Farmer Mike.

During the high season (the 6 weeks before and after the solstice) Mike generally clocks in about 80 hours per week. Sometimes more. He’s an insanely dedicated and hard worker. His drive to produce quality food is no doubt a huge reason our farm has been successful.

I am super dedicated to the farm too, but the medal definitely goes to Mike.

This particular week, he deserves an extra medal. He is giving me one of the most amazing gifts a farm spouse could ask for: a week off the farm to do something special with our kids.

It’s a huge sacrifice for Mike. I work 50 hours per week on the farm, plus I do the bulk of the cooking and household management. It’s no small thing for me to leave for an entire week, as so much work now lays before him.

I’ve set him up with pre-written newsletters and carefully detailed instructions for things I handle and he doesn’t, but there’s only so much I can do ahead. In the end he just has to cover for me.

He’ll do it gracefully and without complaint. And if it’s anything like last year, he’ll still manage to party a little and take advantage of a week with no kids around.

Thank you, Farmer Mike! Thanks for all the hard work you do and for allowing the girls and I to have some quality time together. We’ll miss you!

Cheers,

Farmer Cassie
