Like Finding Cash in Your Pocket: Winter CSA Delivery #2
Thirty weeks of the year we sell food at the farmer’s market on the westside. Those same thirty weeks we pull 6 day work weeks and many extra hours into the night. When the calendar hits the 2nd weekend of November, suddenly it all changes. The farmer’s market ends. Mike goes down to a mellow 40 hours a week and I go down to just 15 hours on the farm, converting the rest to mom mode.
This past Saturday was our first no-market Saturday. I didn’t have to wake up the baby to feed her at 4:50 a.m. I didn’t have to load and hoist and sell food. I didn’t have to spend the whole morning working, only to find myself at 2 pm before I could slow down, breathe and see my kiddos.
Instead, I lazed in bed on a Saturday morning and snuggled with Juna, our youngest. We ate breakfast as a family. We played and lazed and cleaned house. Nobody had to rush anywhere. Later, on the way to our friends house, the car clock read 11:56 a.m. I couldn’t believe it. So much had happened and it wasn’t even lunchtime. At that moment it was like finding twenty bucks in my pocket. A totally unexpected bonus! Except this bonus is infinitely better – I found more time. More time to sleep. More time to read books with my kids. More time, unstructured time.
I love being Farmer Cassie. I love growing food. I love providing food to appreciative customers at farmer’s market. But I also love sleeping in, drinking coffee leisurely, and seeing my family more. I am feeling joyous and grateful for the cold season’s arrival. It is a time of rest and family.
May there be joy and rest in your cold season as well!
Happy cooking. Happy eating.
