Eat Like a Rainbow: CSA Summer ’13 ” Week #8

Eat Like a Rainbow!

At the library, I often raid the children’s music section.  I’m always on the lookout for children’s songs that I enjoy as well. Call me selfish, but I am not willing to listen to hours of Raffi and Barney tunes. But Country does Raffi?  That works for me. I look for music that has enough of a kid and adult sound that Zea and I can enjoy it together. With my audible bar set at this height, you can imagine there is lots of filtering and sorting that occurs. For every 10 songs that I could do without, there is 1 that is great.

A wonderful tune we discovered recently is called “Eat Like a Rainbow,”  written and performed by Jay Mankita. (Click and listen here.)  We found it on a Putumayo Kids’ compilation called ‘Picnic Playground’, which has a handful of other really fun food themed songs.  Even if there are no kids in your radius these days, I think you’ll still appreciate the lyrics to the song:

Eat Like A Rainbow

I like to eat like a rainbow
Builds my body and it makes my brain grow
Helps my heart beat and my blood flow
I like to eat like a rainbow

Red, orange, yellow, green
The tastiest colors I’ve ever seen
I like to eat food that’s purple and blue
Colorful foods are healthier too

Colorful food makes a colorful meal
And that really colors the way that I feel
I’m livin’ in a colorful way
I eat like a rainbow every day

Colorful sunsets, and colorful jokes
Colorful flowers and colorful folks
Colorful shirts and colorful pants
I eat from the rainbow of colorful plants

Let this be a reminder to all of us out there, kid and adult alike – this is the best way to eat, both for the palate and the body!  And this is certainly the best time of year to do it locally.  The fields are just exploding with deliciousness and color.

And for all you parents with small children in the home, try this song out if you need a little help getting those colors into the little bodies of your little ones. If your kids are anything like ours, their love of vegetables is inconsistent and very open to the power of suggestive imagination.  We have definitely been singing this one at the dinner table with success!

We hope you enjoy the rainbow of color in your box this week. Sincerely, the Noltnerwyss family
