Play that Favorite Record: Summer ’16 CSA #10
Lately Mike and I have been able to hear a few live shows and expose ourselves to musicians that are new to us. We’ve purchased some new albums and have been listening to them a lot. Harvesting tomatoes just goes better with some sweet new tunes in your ear.
But after a lot of new music, lately I’ve found myself returning to some of my old favorites. You know, the songs where you know every word and can sign along without a bump. There’s something so satisfying about those old favorites.
A parallel of new discovery has been going on in my kitchen over the last month or so. I’ve been cooking a lot of new dishes. I do this both to put new things on the table for our family and also as research as your farmer. I’m always on the lookout for tasty, easy, seasonal, veggie-heavy recipes to share with you. It’s a different kind of music to my ears when my 4 year old, Edie, says, “Mom will you make this again, because it’s really yummy.”
But just as I’ve found myself taking a break from the new musicians and going back to some of my old favorites, I’m ready to do the same in my kitchen. Something about it being August; about the potato harvest starting this week; about back to school and September planning now happening, makes me realize that all too soon we will be on the winter root crop diet again. Don’t be get me wrong, I love winter dishes! But now is the time to savor all these summer goodies.
So in my kitchen I’m going to start playing my favorite record again. I want to eat our favorite summer dishes as many times as we can before all the sudden we can’t! Favorites in our household include sweet corn and zucchini fritters; green bean, eggplant, and sausage stir-fry; fresh pesto over noodles with diced heirlooms; BLTs with heirlooms on sourdough bread with sweet corn on the side; ratatouille (the chili of summertime) over polenta; pizza with fresh tomatoes. Yum. Yum. And yum.
So expect to see lots of repeats on my meal plan for a while. I aim to try some new recipes over the course of the new few weeks, but I won’t significantly change my recipe planning tune from now until September.
Savor. Savor. And play that favorite record.
