Inner PacMans: Summer CSA ’11 – Week 9

 In CSA Newsletter

I feel a little bit like Ms. PacMan.  Everywhere I turn there is something delicious to eat right in front of me. Cantaloupe. Watermelon. Sungold tomatoes. Basil. Korean melon. Eggplant. Broccoli.   Chomp Chomp Chomp I go.   Those little ghosts from the game chase me around, whispering in my ear, €œYou’re full! Your stomach is going to hurt!€ I try to ignore them. Work work work. Eat eat eat. Don’t let anything stop me.

I’m lucky. Pretty much all year round there is delicious food from our farm around me. But there are certainly times of the year where all those little food pellets I’m PacManning after, are the same. Potatoes. Carrots. Beets. Winter Squash.  The winter levels of the game, if you will. But right now, I’m in a summer level, baby. I feel compelled to chomp as much delicious food as possible. Because even though it’s hot, time is a ticking. Before you know it, fall will be here, and the chin-dripping crops will all be done.

So here’s to you and your family all busting out your inner PacMans for this week’s box.

You will be receiving 3 melons this week: a watermelon, a muskmelon and a Korean melon.  The everyothers will receive a muskmelon with orange flesh; the regulars will receive one with green flesh. The Korean melon has yellow skin on the outside and is whitish on the inside. It is the least sweet and the most crunchy of them all.  Each of the melons will be happiest in your refrigerator. If space is tight, cutting them up first is always a great idea.

Please note that we don’t have room to fit all 3 melons in your box. The watermelons (and maybe the muskmelons too)  will be in separate boxes at the site. Each member is entitled to 1 watermelon.

The other items in your box this week are ones that you have received recently. Check out this week’s recipes for ideas on how to use them up!

We hope to see many of you this weekend out at the farm for the corn boil! It’s not just any potluck, it’s a potluck for and by little local PacMans. The food is always fantastic and you’ll go home full and happy, we promise.  We provide the corn, you provide drinks and dishes to pass.  Bringing a serving spoon for your dish is always helpful.  It’s this Saturday, August 6th from 5-7 pm. We hope to see you!

Thanks for reading, and enjoy your veggies this week! Sincerely, Mike, Cassie and Zea
